Plane standing by for launch

A 932nd Airlift Wing C-40C, sits ready for take-off on an overcast morning, March 2, 2019, at Scott Air Force Base, Illinois. The 932nd AW is an Air Force Reserve Command unit in southern Illinois, flying four of the C-40C planes as part of 22nd Air Force. They support the nation's executive airlift operations. The 932nd Maintenance Group is responsible for maintaining the distinguished visitor airlift planes for worldwide service. The 932nd Airlift Wing is based near the towns of Belleville, Mascoutah, O'Fallon, and Shiloh. The 932nd Airlift Wing is the only reserve unit flying this unique mission under Air Force Reserve Command. Other major areas supporting the reserve unit are the 932nd Mission Support Group, 932nd Medical Group and the 932nd Operations Group. Motivated to run by past failure

Master Sgt. Cynthia Umscheid, 932nd Medical Group, shows off her two favorite marathon medals. She was motivated to run more often and for longer distances by a disappointment. "Several years ago, I failed my Air Force fitness test; I was in school and not eating correctly. I decided I needed a new goal to keep me going. I thought about it and I wanted to do a run in every state in America, and sat down and made a long range plan," said Sergeant Umscheid. For those just getting started or needing additional help, she has a recommendation: "Find out what works for you and start this week by getting out and walking a minute, then run a minute. Medal presented to Chaplain Williams

At left, Chaplain (Lt. Col.) Thornton shares a smile as he presents the Air Force Commendation Medal to Chaplain (Maj.) Michael Williams, for Meritorious Service in a special ceremony held Feb. 9, 2019, at Scott Air Force Base, Illinois. The medal and certificate recognized Chaplain Williams work over a long multi-year period starting in September 2012. The 932nd AW Chapel Corps of chaplains and chaplain assistants, referred to as Religious Support Teams (RST), have the privilege of focusing on caring for unit members and their families throughout the deployment cycle and beyond. Unit visits and personal engagements are a part of this warrior care. "The 932nd AW team provide proactive pastoral care as well as religious accommodations that meet diverse spiritual needs, in order to foster the spiritual pillar of Comprehensive Airman Fitness within the Wing," said Chaplain Thornton, who also retires today.

Warmth of unit family welcomes deployer back

Several 932nd Airlift Wing members got out on a cold evening and welcomed back returning Airmen recently, including deployer and unit Chaplain (Maj.) Michael Williams, in blue shirt. He was greeted with applause, hugs and verbal greetings of appreciation upon his arrival back in Illinois on January 27, 2019. Various members of the wing staff, public affairs, medical, family readiness and operations were represented. Although tired from the long trip back, the chaplain expressed gratitude and thankfulness to those on hand.
