Just after a storm passed by the base, Col. Karl Goerke (right), commander of the 932nd Airlift Wing, discussed the latest weather outlook and storm patterns with Maj. Laura Maddin, who is commander of the 12th Operational Weather Flight at the Illinois reserve unit. Her unit practices taking over forecasting services for the National Weather Service office in Oklahoma, in case of emergency or disaster that might happen. Maj. Chris Higgins, 12th Operational Weather Flight, 932nd Airlift Wing, looks at information from the Storm Prediction Center with his main focus being convective activity and severe thunderstorms. The Air Force has always been the backup agency for the Storm Prediction Center (SPC). It was on May 1, 2009 that the mission came to the 15th Operational Weather Squadron. The SPC handed off support to Airmen like Maj. Higgins on 26 March and even though SPC has a lot of other weather speciality products they produce, the ones that 12 OWF are in charge of are the convective outlooks days and weather watches. SPC is located in Norman, Oklahoma, so if they ever have to shelter for a tornado the Storm Prediction Center backup team is called in to take over. Maj. A subtle bit of humor can be found on a cold winter morning in Illinois. There is no smoking at the 932nd Medical Group building and who would want to stand outside in sub-freezing temperatures? The 932nd Airlift Wing experienced the coldest temperatures of the new year so far with overnights far below 0 degrees and close to 14 inches of snow around the local area. Old man winter strikes again at the base. It's hard to believe but snowy days are still around at the beginning of Spring for the 932nd Airlift Wing. With only 7 days until the Cardinals opening baseball game, snow hit the area hard. Delayed weather reporting happened today after up to 10 inches of snow fell throughout the Saint Louis area Sunday.
