GPS satellites
Beginning in the 1970s, GPS satellites have been launched into space so that now there are more than thirty orbiting the planet, providing accurate, free, timing information that is used in a huge number of civil endeavors, from banking to tracking the movement of goods and keeping traffic moving smoothly in cities and towns across the globe.
