Historian of the 932nd Airlift Wing, Master Sgt. Gerald Sonnenberg, makes his best effort to run away from the security forces and their canine during a special 932nd Airlift Wing Boss Day event November 5, 2016 at Scott Air Force Base, Ill. September brings solemn anniversary in 932nd Airlift Wing flying history. Site of long forgotten fatal C-9A crash found by wing historian, Master Sgt. Gerald Sonnenberg. Mid-September in southern Illinois is typically a mix of cool mornings and comfortably warm, sunny days as summer comes to a close and ushers in the beginning of fall. Farmers are busy harvesting the hundreds of square miles of corn fields surrounding Scott AFB, Illinois. It was one of those days 45 years ago on Sept. 16, 1971, when one of the Air Force's new C-9A Nightingales crashed just off base. (U.S. Air Force photo by Maj. Stan Paregien)
Commander of the 932nd Airlift Wing, Col. Jonathan Philebaum, gets a situational awareness briefing from Master Sgt. Salvatore Urbano, with the 932nd Security Forces Squadron, before putting on his helmet of protection and moving deeper into the forest to execute the mission as part of a four person team The SFS squads spent a hot weekend in the woods shooting at targets, moving as a team, and performing low crawls during a portion of the combat physical exercise course. It was held during the July unit training assembly, July 9-10, 2016, Scott Air Force Base, Illinois. SFS had members flip a tire, low crawl, run with fuel cans filled with water, perform a first aid fireman carry to lift and move a fellow Airman and then drag them a set distance, all while sprinting between stations.
